Abstract

This article presents the development trajectory of policies for access to public information in Mexico, in particular the approval of the Access to Information Law, in 2002, and its subsequent reforms. Starting from a brief look at aspects that mark the historical political context of the country, we seek to understand how the right of access to public information has been consolidated and what challenges persist in the Mexican scenario. Based on a literature review and interviews carried out with Mexican researchers and activists, it is concluded that the country – which has some similarities with Brazil at a historical and political level – was a reference for the Latin American region due to its pioneering spirit in the regulation of the right of access to information. However, despite the advances achieved in this field, the country does not fail to face challenges related to the theme in the face of new political scenarios that affect INAI's funding and the fulfillment of requests for access to information.
